Progression to Drug Dependency

List the 5 steps in the progression to drug dependence and a brief description of each.

1. I will just try it:
You are tempted to experiment with the drug

2. I like the feeling:
A person continues to use and spends more time with those people who use the drug and less time with people who do not use drugs.

3. I need more of the drug to feel good:
Tolerance develops you will need to use more of the drug to get "high."

4. I don't have a problem with drugs:
A person is in denial, a person refuses to recognize they are using the drug and makes excuses for this behavior.

5. I just have to have it:
A person is drug dependent, physical and/or psychological addiction.

Warning Signs of Drug Abuse

Select 4 or 5 of the warning signs that you would observe as a “best friend.” Some are listed below:

1. talking about trying a drug

2. making plans to be in situations in whichg there will be drugs

3. giving up friends who do not use drugs

4. spending more time with people who use drugs

5. getting into "touble" for using drugs or being with people who use drugs

Denial versus Honest Talk

Enabler:
a person who knowingly or unknowingly support the harmful behavior of another person

Codependence:
a mental condition in which a person denies their feelings and copes with this denial in harmful ways

Honest Talk:
straightforward sharing of a person’s thoughts and feelings about a situation, a person or a person’s behavior

Formal Intervention and Treatment

A person who uses Honest Talk knows that they must confront the drug-dependent person
in order for this person to get treatment.

But confronting the drug-dependent person is tough to do. You may need help from a counselor. The counselor will meet with the family members and the drug-dependent person.

Formal intervention:

·family members and a counselor meet with the drug-dependent person

·family members are honest with the drug-dependent person and tell them about their harmful behavior

·family members clearly say why treatment is necessary

Inpatient care:
treatment is given during a stay at a facility
usually for 28 days.

Outpatient care:
treatment is not given in an overnight stay facility in can be given in the counselor’s office

Relapse:
a return to addictive behavior after a period of having stopped the addictive behavior
